What is a Service Technician?

The Versatility of a Service Technician

Have you ever had your internet cut off unexpectedly due to a power outage? Or car troubles slowing you down? Then you need some service help! According to Wise Geeks a service technician is someone with advanced practical knowledge on how certain systems work. With this knowledge they use it to provide service and repairs on usually mechanized or complex objects like automobiles, furnaces, plumbing equipment, or computers, and an abundance of other things. Another name to call a service tech is field technician. This can apply to many different types of work.

Out of the many names you can call a service technician, one important technician is a field technician, they are skilled in repairing or servicing equipment needed to provide you with your power or cable. Since you will be traveling to different locations, the term field is used. You will travel to places including residences or certain neighborhoods in order to perform tests or maintenance. But not all of the Service techs are in the field; some have the ability to work out of a shop. Have you ever had car trouble? Well when you bring your car in to a shop, you’re bringing your car to them, where they have access to all of their tools and testing equipment. They will also have access to a supply of parts to help repair and maintain your vehicle.

The same goes for things that break in your home like a heater, it doesn’t make any sense to send your heater off to a remote place to get it fixed. A technician who repairs important appliances must come to your home, and work on whatever problems exist on the premises. Sometimes a technician will come to your home and work on repairing your computer or solving connection problems. In other cases you would have to bring your computer to them.

There are many responsibilities a service technician has, they should be able to provide service and customer support during field visits, manages all on site installation, repair, maintenance, and test tasks. They should be able to diagnose errors or technical problems and determine proper solution, produce timely and detailed service reports, follow all of their company’s field procedures and protocols, and build a positive relationship with their customers.
