Improving the Quality of Repair and Service with ASE Certification Test
ASE, or Automotive Service of Excellence, is a group that has been certifying professionals and shops in the automotive repair and service industry since 1972. They are an independent non-profit organization helping individuals learn about quality vehicle repair and service by testing and certifying automotive professionals. The ASE certification test strives to improve the quality of vehicle repair in the United States through the testing and certification of repair and service professionals.
Consumers need to distinguish between incompetent and competent automotive technicians to do business with. Therefore, it’s important for auto mechanics to have the ASE certification because it gives shop owners and customers a better view of the technician’s expertise and knowledge. According to ASE.com, over 300,000 automotive technician and service professionals hold ASE certifications. Ultimately, the ASE certification test exists to protect the automotive service consumer, shop owner, and the automotive technician.
Once the ASE certification test is passed, automotive technicians must have a minimum of two years on-the-job training or one year of on-the-job training and a two-year degree in automotive repair to qualify for certification. Upon certification, the applicant will receive an ASE shoulder patch, wallet ID card, and a certificate for framing.
There are several different fields that professionals are ASE certified in. These fields range from Automobile Technicians to Parts Specialists. An Automotive Technician inspects, maintains, and repairs vehicle’s systems, from its body to engine. They perform normal routine inspection and maintenance which includes such tasks as checking tire pressure, changing engine oil, checking and replacing spark plugs, wires and distributor caps or ensuring the reliability of the vehicle’s brake system. Often times the automotive mechanic will have to evaluate, diagnose, and fix any problems with any part of the vehicle. These tasks could range from the body paint of the car to the computer or electronics of the vehicle. Automobile parts and systems are rapidly changing and becoming more advanced through time, so it’s important for the mechanic to keep updated and informed about changes in the automotive industry. In fact, to remain ASE certified, professionals must retest every five years to stay current on the ever changing and advancing automotive technology. Not only does the mechanic need to keep a watchful eye out to look for problems with a vehicle, but also pay attention to sounds, smells, and behavior of the vehicle.
