What is HVAC School?

Let’s start with the basics: what is HVAC? HVAC stands for heating, ventilation and air conditioning. So HVAC technicians are professionals who have been training to work with the systems that keep our indoor environments comfortable throughout the. They keep our homes and offices warm in the winter and cool in the summer.

HVAC systems are anything but simple. They are in fact composed of complex units that need to be installed, maintained and repaired by specialists. This is where HVAC school comes in.

HVAC schools offer hands-on training that prepares students for what they will encounter in the real world as HVAC technicians. Examples of what HVAC students learn in school include:

  • Installation and repair of residential and light commercial gas heating systems
  • Service and repair of electric and hydronic heating systems
  • Start up of new air conditioning and heating equipment
  • Boiler operation
  • Mechanical and electrical troubleshooting and circuit repair on residential and light commercial equipment
  • Troubleshooting, installation, & start up of heating and air conditioning systems

Why Go To HVAC School?

There are many great reasons to attend HVAC school, and here we are going to cover two of them.

The first reason is the length of time it takes to complete an HVAC training program at a career school. Typically, HVAC programs can be completed in under a year. That means you can finish your training and start working in the field in less than 12 months. Compare that with the years it takes to complete an HVAC apprenticeship and you can see why so many people opt for HVAC school!

Another great reason to attend HVAC school is that the HVAC field is not only stable, it is growing. HVAC repair is a stable field because it isn’t something that cannot be outsourced. We are always going to need qualified HVAC technicians to repair and install our HVAC systems here in the US. The HVAC field is also growing. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics expects employment of HVAC technicians to increase by 15% from 2016 to 2026. This growth is likely to be driven by new commercial and residential development that will lead to new jobs for qualified candidates.
