How to Become an Automotive Technician

Have you ever heard of Eric The Car Guy? Eric The Car Guy is a master automotive technician who has a great YouTube channel (ETCG1) where he discusses all things related to working as an auto technician. One of our favorite ETCG1 videos is called “How to Become an Automotive Technician” and we have the link for you right here:

If you don’t have time to watch the entire video now, here are some of the key points that Eric The Car Guy makes in this video:

  • The days when you could just walk into an auto repair shop with little or no experience and land an entry-level auto technician job are gone. Automotive technology is far more complex today than it once was and receiving formal automotive training is exceptionally important to doing the job right.
  • Employers of automotive technicians are looking for competency when they make a new hire. The validation you get as a graduate from a tech school gives employers the assurance that you know your stuff and that you can perform the job properly. Basically, completing a formal automotive technician program will prove exceptionally helpful when you start looking for a job in the field.
  • Experience plays a big part when it comes to getting a job. Of course it is great to theoretically understand what needs to be done to fix a transmission, but if you can’t turn the wrench and actually fix the problem you aren’t going to be much use in an automotive mechanic shop. That is why at ATI we make sure that our students receive extensive hands-on training in the field in order to put their theoretical training to practice in the real world.
  • Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) has developed a standard by which to determine the competency of automotive technicians. ASE is one of the most important certifications you can get and these days it is virtually impossible to get a job as a reputable mechanic without ASE certification. One of the great things about going to a technical school is that the time you spend there usually goes toward the 2 years of real world experience required to obtain ASE certification.
  • In summary, Eric The Car Guy says: Go to school, find a technical program, and get your ASE certifications. THAT is how ETCG recommends you become an automotive technician!

If you live in the Las Vegas area and you plan to take Eric The Car Guy’s advice about attending a technical school, you are in luck because ATI offers an accredited automotive technician program that prepares students for ASE certification.
