Preparing for Your HVAC Interview

Preparing for an interview is crucially important! Regardless of your educational attainment, your experience or even your existing network, knowing how to interview well may be the difference between hired or unemployed.

One way we like to show our students at the Advanced Training Institute how to be successful in an interview is to show them what not to do first.

So listen up HVAC technicians: here is a hilarious video showcasing what NOT to do during your HVAC tech interviews! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cyF-4XTNW48

In this Youtube video we watch Mr. Harvey interview Tommy who is looking for an HVAC tech job. It’s pretty obvious Tommy won’t be hired by Mr. Harvey because of the following blunders.

  1. Tommy does not dress or communicate professionally. When going for an interview dress neatly, and always be respectful in how you address your interviewer. Use Mr./Mrs./Miss. unless advised otherwise by the interviewer.

  1. Tommy admits he was fired and accuses his boss of being a jerk. It is likely the hiring manager will inquire about your previous work experience, and if you were terminated you need to explain why this happened, how you have learned from the experience, and avoid personal insults.

  1. Tommy shares with Mr. Harvey his tendency to rip off bosses and customers, disregard road rules, and drink alcohol during his lunch break. While honesty is usually a good thing, Tommy is clearly not suited to the job.

  1. Tommy doesn’t have HVAC industry knowledge, nor does he have his Section 609 EPA Certification, and admits he is more of a salesman than a tech. Mr. Harvey is hiring someone to repair, install, and maintain HVAC systems. Preparing for interviews requires you demonstrate your skills and knowledge, so it is a good idea to review your notes and come prepared.
