The Daily Routine of Repair Shop Duties
As an automotive technician, you are faced with many new challenges on a day to day basis. A typical workday is filled with tasks and problems that must be addressed. While automotive technicians can face a wide variety of different daily tasks, some things remain consistent; technicians will always be called upon to solve problems and find practical solutions in the repair shop.
A typical day for an automotive technician starts with the opening of the shop. This includes reviewing any appointments that are scheduled for the day and planning out what jobs must be completed before heading home. This may also include taking a quick look at the inventory to ensure all supplies and components are available for the tasks being performed that day. After this is completed, the rest of the day is filled with performing scheduled repair tasks and troubleshooting. Sometimes troubleshooting problems can be obvious and can be a quick fix such as worn brake pads or a punctured tire; other times the problem is not as apparent and diagnostic procedures must be used. This usually includes talking with the customer about the nature of the issue, visually inspecting the vehicle, test driving the vehicle, or even running diagnostic tests using specialized equipment.
Other than troubleshooting and repairing vehicles, at times daily tasks include routine maintenance such as rotating tires, changing oil, or lubricating engine parts to ensure a vehicle is in good condition. Although the majority of an automotive technician’s day is spent in the repair shop working with vehicles, a technician must also possess proficient customer service skills in order to communicate with customers about the condition, repair, and cost of their vehicle.
