Have you ever observed someone in your industry at work and thought to yourself, I can do a better job that that. You’re not alone; and while it can be infuriating to see someone perform poorly, particularly in a field you yourself are passionate about, there is value in watching what not to do as a personal trainer.
To illustrate this important point, we would like to introduce CPT Matty Fusaro. In this YouTube video http://goo.gl/6XAqrQ Matty beautifuly outlines how to spot a bad personal trainer.
Before watching this video, think about some examples of a bad personal trainer yourself! Take notes, and share them in the comments.
So How Do You Spot a Bad CPT?
- The workouts and diet plans seem cookie cutter: all bodies are unique and there is no silver bullet in personal training.
- The trainer disregards health, and safety and doesn’t ask questions about a client’s medical history.
- A CPT isn’t taking notes or charting a client’s progress.
- A trainer puts personal goals before his or her client’s goals; not all people have the same fitness objectives.
- Communication is directive, rather than dialectic. A CPT is a coach, not a boss.
- A CPT treats their understanding of fitness as intellectual property.
- A coach isn’t going that extra mile for his or her clients – we’ve all seen trainers on their phones at the gym before, and it’s not a good look.
Graduates of the Advanced Training Institute here in Las Vegas learn not only the theoretical knowledge necessary to succeed as a CPT, but also the practical skills. Being a CPT requires a nuanced understanding of the physical body, and the mental – a CPT must be motivational.
So what does it take to become a personal fitness trainer? Being a CPT requires taking pleasure in sweat, a pounding heart and performance attire – but that’s not all it takes! The best certified personal trainers (CPT) don’t just love working out themselves, they can inspire others to do so too.
Certified Personal Trainers in Las Vegas have numerous tools in the toolbox – or is it dumbbells on the rack?
- They are motivational. Pounding pavement when the newest episode of The Walking Dead has just been released isn’t easy. As a personal trainer you have to know how to get people amped to workout!
- They have an eye for technique. Squats are not snowflakes – every one should not be unique.
- They have an interest in data and evaluation. Even though a CPT isn’t pouring over spreadsheets, they are customizing, planning and evaluating personal fitness history and goals. They must be able to track progress, and design workout plans accordingly.
- They realize not everyone is an athlete. Let’s face it, most people just want to eat muffins without the tops pouring over their jeans.
